The Reading Corner

Read the story behind the story

Seressia Glass knows how to tell a good love story. She’s written over 25 contemporary and paranormal romance stories. She’s also penned urban fantasy stories steeped in Egyptian mythology.

And one of her recent works, The Love Con has received stellar reviews and is an Amazon Editor’s Pick, a LibraryReads Pick, and Library Journal’s Best Romance of 2021.

Here’s what the book is about:

Sometimes Kenya Davenport believes she was switched at the hospital—how else could a lover of anime, gaming, and cosplay come from STEM parents? Still, Kenya dreams of being able to turn her creative hobby into a career. She finally has a chance to make it big when she joins the reality show competition Cosplay or No Way.

There’s just one catch: the challenge for the final round is all about iconic pairs, and the judges want the contestants’ significant others to participate. Unfortunately, Kenya is as single as can be at the moment. Luckily her best friend, Cameron Lassiter, agrees to be her fake boyfriend for the show.

Role-playing a couple in love will force them to explore what they’re hiding under the mask of friendship. Can Kenya and Cam fake it until she makes it, or will she be real about her feelings, knowing it could cost her the best friend she’s ever had?

The book has been described as a love letter to geekdom and female fan culture.

“I would say out of all the books I’ve written, The Love Con is the one that’s closest to me,” Glass said. “The heroine Kenya, is a plus-size nerdy girl and so am I. She likes cosplay and so do I, but that’s about as far as the similarities go. I just really wanted to write a book, if anything, I’ll say I wrote it for me. I’m a geek and nerd, I’ve gone to Dragon Con and some other cons where we talk about nerdy stuff. This story is about Kenya and how she’s comfortable in her skin as a plus-sized girl and as a nerdy girl.”

And this is one of the biggest highlights of Glass’s book. Too often authors try to tell a story about plus-sized characters and make their weight a flaw, which then becomes a flaw in the story. “I wanted this to be a love story to plus-sized women,” Glass said. (Mission accomplished) “And to Black nerds, so I wasn’t going to have any negativity from her or about her internally about her size or about her skin

But in the fantastic flirty book, Glass takes the friends-to-lovers trope and the fake dating trope to the highest level.

“Because it’s a reality show and they have to visit them at home, there’s only one bed at one point. It is a trope-tastic book and I have a lot of fun writing it. I’m glad that a lot of people are enjoying it too,” she said.

And A LOT of people love this book. There have been several TikTok videos made about The Love Con.

“I’m still gobsmacked anytime someone tells me that they read my book,” she said. “It’s always great to hear that people not only read it but they enjoyed it. And enjoyed it to the point that they’re making TikTok videos, that’s huge. That’s a win for me. Whenever I have a bad day, I can think about that.”

Glass shouldn’t be having any bad days as her second gamer romance has been released. Game On is out now!

Here’s what it’s about:

Samara Reynolds has built a large following as a gamer under an anonymous screen name, and uses her skills as a DEIA consultant to advocate for equal representation in video games. When she posted a video critiquing the popular game Legendsfall, she knew she’d get a reaction from her fans, but the video leads to hundreds of female gamers critiquing the game and its company, Artemis Games. The only thing more unexpected than starting an online movement is getting a job offer from the handsome CEO of Artemis.

Aron Galanis has been on a mission to get his company certified to create gaming content for people with disabilities. When he sees Artemis trending online for all the wrong reasons, he’s determined to right his wrongs and offers the originator a mea culpa, as well as a job offer to overhaul the character options in Legendsfall.

Working together turns Aron and Samara from adversaries into allies, allies into friends, and after that—something more. But once their relationship goes public, will Aron and Samara be able to weather the storm and fight for their happy ending, or is it game over?

One thing about Glass’s books is that she doesn’t shy away from controversies in the gaming and fandom communities. It gives the stories a richer feel and spreads hope that things can change in the real world. Because that’s what good fiction should do.
